Another excellent week at BPS just gone, starting with our early session on Astrophotography from Andy Taylor. Andy did a great job of demystifying this subject, telling us all what can be achieved without specialist equipment (and also what a little bit of specialist equipment can add). All that was missing was instructions on how to manage the British weather to guarantee a cloud-free night… I expect we will start seeing lots of astro images in future competitions!
Our main session was the second PDI competition of the season. Our judge, Monica Doshi, did us a huge favour by standing in as a last minute replacement, and went on to give us a masterclass in how to judge a competition, with great feedback on all images and STILL managing to judge nearly 100 images and finish the evening on time! I do not envy any of the judges who are asked to adjudicate on BPS images – the standard of images presented is so high these days that trying to pick winners is almost impossible. Congratulations to all those that took part and especially to those whose pictures were awarded the highest possible scores.
Coming up this week we have more treats in store. The early session is all about printing, especially Paper Selection and Printer Profiles, by Jenny Webster and Sheila Ballantyne-Smith. I know that both these can make a huge difference to the appearance of a printed image and lift great images into spectacular ones.
The main session features two of our own photographers – Al Haden and Nick Veale – talking about topics close to their hearts. The website still lists the topics as TBC but I believe they will be talking about photographic opportunities in Iceland and Long Exposure photography. Maybe even long exposure photographic opportunities in Iceland..
I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.
Richard
